New Marlborough schools a step closer

The next milestone in the transformation of education in Marlborough has been reached, with the appointment of Naylor Love as the lead supplier to the three schools’ rebuild and relocation, Education Minister Chris Hipkins says.

Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges will be relocated on the site currently occupied by Marlborough Girls’ College and Bohally Intermediate. The Intermediate will be relocated and rebuilt on the current Marlborough Boys’ College site.

“This will be one of the biggest education projects the Ministry of Education has ever delivered,” Chris Hipkins said.

“The school rebuilds will be significant for generations of Marlborough students, as well as playing a big role in supporting the Top of the South Island in the post-COVID-19 recovery.

“A key part of the delivery of this project is a requirement that local materials, labour and skills are used wherever possible. It’s expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, and retain skills in the community.

“The project will also see students given the opportunity to become involved either through classroom work, or via pathways to employment after their schooling is complete. Skills that will be required include architecture, design, engineering, project management, building, plumbing, electricity work, geotechnical skills and machinery operation,” Chris Hipkins said.

Naylor Love and a wider team of specialist suppliers, including architects, designers and engineers will work with the Ministry of Education and local stakeholders to plan the project and progress the master planning for the development, followed by the detailed design and construction phases.

The master planning phase is likely to run for most of 2021, with involvement from the three schools, iwi groups and the community.
